Finding the Perfect Baby Names

The decision of baby names is often the most perplexing part of becoming a parent. It gets even more complicated when two parents each have a favorite and no one is really ready to give in on the point. Even worse is when neither parent can come up with great baby names and the due date steadily approaches. So how do you find those awesome baby names? There are lots of resources and lots of things to consider.

Baby names are not just baby names - this is a label that's going to be with a child for his or her entire life. And the parents who have chosen badly are going to hear about it for that child's entire life as well. Put in that context, there's no wonder there is so much emphasis on baby names and choosing well.

Before you panic, you should consider the resources available to help you with this task. You'll find millions of websites dedicated to baby names in some form or fashion. There are thousands of books available for the same purposes. Family and friends will be happy to offer suggestions or knock down your choices. You can even hire a consultant to help you choose. In fact, it may be more frightening to try to weed through the baby names resources available than to eventually choose! Start by considering some options for making the choice. If you want to use family names, look first at the immediate generations - parents and grandparents and their siblings - but also consider going back a few generations. You'll find some great names in your family tree that have not been used recently, but allow you to follow your desire to use family names.

Meanings of baby names are also important to some parents-to-be. Looking up the meanings may help you decide that you don't want a particular combination of names because put together they mean "clumsy warrior." Likewise, you may find that choosing names with strong or delicate meanings is a good way to choose.

Choose early, choose often. When it comes to baby names, it's perfectly okay to try out a name for a week or two then discard it. If it simply sounds ridiculous, your child will thank you for discarding it before it became part of the permanent record.

Finally, keep a list of at least some of those baby names that were considered briefly and tossed aside. You may even add some ridiculous ideas that you never seriously considered. Why? When your child comes to you later and complains, you can say, "Don't complain. We almost named you Horatio Hexavellion or Shavasha Lulu." That should put a stop to that discussion.

Sexy books where teenagers shop

Marci Milfs was shocked! Shocked, I tell you! She went into an Urban Outfitters clothing store in Northwestern Washington State to buy some hip, trendy clothing for her teenage son when she spotted some books on a table in the store. In addition to such subversive works as Stephen Colbert's "I Am America (And So Can You)", she found a book entitled "Porn for Women" which featured pictures of -- gasp! -- men doing housework.

Apparently, the store also carried "Pornogami: A Guide to the Ancient Art of Paper-Folding for Adults" which is wholly unsuitable for teenaged pieces of paper. "When I saw it, I was shocked," Milfs said. The books were apparently right there in plain sight where anyone -- teenagers included -- could see them. She is planning to file a complaint with the city and has already contacted her state representative.

Urban Outfitters, for their part, wants to be "the brand of choice for well-educated, urban-minded young adults." They do this by "creating a differential shopping experience, which creates an emotional bond with the 18 to 30 year old target customer we serve." The store's corporate office told Milfs that the books are not sex books but art books.

I can see the art book argument with the Pornogami book, but the Porn for Women book is just plain humour. It features pictures of clothed men doing housework and saying things such as "Ooh, look. The NFL playoffs are today. I bet we'll have no trouble parking at the crafts fair." It seems to me that if that's the raciest thing a college-aged girl sees, she's doing something wrong.

A-Rod not so tough after all

We've all seen the movie version of the nervous dad-to-be sweating bullets and passing out in the delivery room while his long-suffering wife stoically endures the pain of childbirth. The next scene usually involves poor mom left to fend for herself while all medical personnel attend to dad, who by the time is on the floor. It's pretty standard stuff in the movies and usually good for a laugh. But does this ever happen in real life? Yes, it does.

According to Cynthia Rodriguez, the birth of her first child could have been scripted in Hollywood. Her husband is New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez - better known as A-Rod - and for a big, tough ball player, he's pretty wimpy when it comes to hospitals.

For an episode of YES Network's YESterdays, Cynthia recounts the 2004 birth of daughter Natasha Alexander Rodriguez. She says she knew her husband had difficulty dealing with medical situations, but was hopeful that he could stay upright and conscious while she gave birth. No such luck.

"The one nurse had a cold cloth on his head. The other nurse had the blood pressure on his arm. And my mother was like rubbing his back. And he is passed out on a couch. And I am there, in the middle of labor," she says. "And really, I am not being paid much attention to besides the doctor and a couple of nurses," she said. "And he is there moaning. In between pushing, I am going, `Honey, are you OK?' and `Are you breathing? Are you OK?' "

Thing went much smoother the second time around. When Cynthia gave birth to Ella Alexander last month, A-Rod arrived about ten minutes after she delivered. I imagine him walking very slowly down the hall of the hospital, hoping and praying the messy stuff will be over by the time he reaches her room.

What about you? Was your labor and delivery a comedy show, too?

Product Recall: Playworld swingsets

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced the recall of about 17,300 Playground Swing Sets made by Playworld Systems Inc., of Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. The clevis bearing on the swing set can wear out and cause the swing to detach, posing a fall hazard to children.

There are seventeen different swings involved in this recall and the model numbers can be found here.

These were sold through authorized dealers nationwide to day care centers and children's learning centers from January 2007 through February 2008 for between $770 and $3,100.

If you have one of the recalled swings, you should immediately remove it from the swing set until a repair kit can be installed. The company has sent direct mail notices to consumers, but for further information you can contact Playworld Systems at (800) 233-8404 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit their Web site.

Microsoft gives hospitals xboxes

A lot of people in the technology industry consider Microsoft to be pure evil. It turns out that they aren't completely evil after all. The company has partnered with the Companions in Courage Foundation to deliver gaming kiosks to children's hospitals around the country, loaded with an xbox 360 video game system, games, and TV shows and movies.

The kiosks will also let hospitalized kids play games and chat with other kids in other hospitals over a private network. The first batch was installed at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of New York-Presbyterian, Children's Hospital & Regional Medical Center of Seattle and the Children's Hospital of Orange County in California.

"Entertainment, creativity and personal connections can be important factors in alleviating some of the isolation and discomfort these children experience each day," said Companions in Courage founder and National Hockey League Hall of Famer Pat LaFontaine, speaking of kids who are in the hospital for an extended period. "These gaming stations are a perfect complement to the interactive playrooms."

The mission of Companions in Courage is to build interactive playrooms in hospitals throughout North America. "It's extremely gratifying to witness the joy and excitement of these children and teens when they have a chance to break away from the normal hospital routine, and make new friends while playing video games," said Cynthia Sparer, executive director of Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of New York-Presbyterian.

For once, I have to say -- and this pains me to no end -- good job Microsoft!
